The ABCs of decorating children’s rooms. This week: Go Wall Color Crazy!
I love designing children’s rooms!
I can let my imagination run wild and never run out of ideas! This is my first in a series of five articles dealing with designing and decorating children's rooms. I begin with my favorite decorating helper: wall color !
No matter the size of the room, amount of furniture, number of kids in the room or the age or sex of the kids: the color or colors of the walls can make a big change in a child’s room without breaking the bank.
1. Wall color can be a low-ticket item – especially if you paint the walls yourself – this way you and your kids (if they are old enough) can give their room a new fresh look nearly every year!
2. Forget the “color” rules. Use any color you and your kids want - no matter the age or sex of your children! Monochrome (one-color) wall looks can be great in small or large children’s rooms, just as painting each wall a different color. (Made a color mistake? No need to fret! Take that roller and try a different color.)
3. You can easily divide a room between two siblings by positioning their beds on separate walls and then painting the wall behind each beds a totally different color or a different shade of the same color.
4. Stencils. Stencils are another great way to divide a room between siblings or different activity areas in a room no matter what the size. You can paint the walls one color and then stencil using a variety of stencils and paint colors (either bought stencils or ones you make) each wall/area to your heart’s content!
5. Ceilings. I believe that ceilings are the most forgotten and underused space in our homes! Painting the ceiling of a children’s room gives a new and deeper dimension to their space and for older kids a painted ceiling can be “serious cool” during sleep overs. You can paint clouds and the sun, stars and planets (a great way for kids to learn about the solar system) that glow in the dark, rainbows and birds; let your and your children's imagination go WILD.
